Coinbase Expands UK Derivatives Access to Professional Investors

Coinbase expands UK derivatives perpetuals futures options professional investors MiFID license

Aug 11, 2026 – Coinbase is rolling out a comprehensive derivatives suite for professional investors in the United Kingdom, including perpetuals, dated futures, and crypto options, as the exchange advances its "Everything Exchange" strategy in one of its largest international markets.

The offering covers more than 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities, and foreign exchange, with perpetuals available around the clock and leverage of up to 50x. Dated futures will offer fixed settlement dates with leverage of up to 20x, while the options offering is limited to crypto and includes calls, puts, and multi-leg strategies.

The MiFID License That Made It Possible

The rollout follows Coinbase's recently secured MiFID investment services license from the UK Financial Conduct Authority, which fundamentally changes what the exchange can offer UK investors.

"In plain terms: we can now offer traditional financial instruments, not just crypto."
— Keith Grose, Coinbase UK CEO

Coinbase describes itself as "the most comprehensively regulated crypto player" in the UK market. The license sits alongside its existing UK e-money license and crypto registration, consolidating its position in the UK market.

Who Qualifies and What They Can Trade

This is not a general retail rollout. Access is limited to UK customers classified as Professional Clients, with retail traders excluded under UK financial regulations.

Three contract types available:

Key Features

Perpetuals

Up to 50x

170+ assets, 24/7, no expiry

Dated Futures

Up to 20x

Fixed settlement dates, no funding rates

Crypto Options

Calls/puts, single or multi-leg strategies

The perpetuals offering spans more than 170 underlying assets including crypto, commodities, equities, and FX. Dated futures contracts are available across commodity and financial contracts, while options are limited to crypto.

The "Everything Exchange" Strategy

The derivatives launch is the latest piece of Coinbase's broader push to become a cross-asset platform where users can access stablecoin payments, savings, borrowing, crypto, derivatives, and equities under one login.

Recent UK expansion milestones:

  • MiFID license secured (July 2026) — enabling derivatives and equities
  • Equities trading launched — nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks for eligible UK users
  • Savings and borrow products already available

Coinbase said the UK is "one of the world's most sophisticated capital markets" and that the license gives both crypto holders and newcomers regulated access to traditional investments today, without waiting for the UK's full crypto regime, which is expected to take effect in October 2027.

A Strategic Revenue Diversification Play

The move comes as Coinbase diversifies revenue sources beyond bitcoin spot trading. In Q2 2026, the company reported that 88% of net revenue came from sources other than Bitcoin spot trading.

The Bottom Line

Coinbase's UK derivatives expansion is a significant milestone in the exchange's evolution from a crypto-only platform to a regulated cross-asset financial services provider. The professional-client focus ensures the products are targeted at sophisticated investors who can handle the risks of leveraged derivatives, while the MiFID license provides a regulatory foundation that few crypto-native firms can match.

For UK professional traders, the offering brings institutional-grade derivatives tools — including perpetuals and options — to a regulated platform that already holds FCA authorization.
