Cypherpunk Launches Major Zcash Mining Fleet After $33M Winklevoss Deal

Cypherpunk launches a major Zcash mining fleet with 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate after a $33.33 million Winklevoss Capital deal.

Cypherpunk Technologies, the Nasdaq-listed privacy technology company, says it has launched what it describes as the world's largest Zcash mining fleet. The operation, dubbed Cypherpunk Mining, came online with roughly 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate deployed across the United States.

The 4.2 GSol/s deployment represents roughly 18% of Zcash's network hashrate, according to Cypherpunk. The entire project was funded through a $33.33 million equity-based transaction with Winklevoss Capital—the venture firm of Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss.

Cypherpunk estimates the current addressable mining market at more than $250 million annually based on prevailing ZEC prices. With this launch, Cypherpunk Mining immediately becomes the Zcash network's largest active fleet.

Why This Is Different From Regular Mining News

Most mining stories are about hashrate. This one is about something bigger.

Cypherpunk describes itself as the largest corporate holder of ZEC, currently sitting on 323,394 ZEC—about 1.92% of the circulating supply. The company's stated goal is to reach 5% of ZEC's entire supply.

The mining operation is designed to accelerate that path. Cypherpunk estimates that miners collectively receive roughly 43,800 ZEC per month in block rewards, and Cypherpunk says its mining economics allow it to produce ZEC at costs significantly below the prevailing spot price.

Will McEvoy, Cypherpunk's Chief Investment Officer, put it this way:

"The Zcash flow from Cypherpunk Mining provides financial and operational flexibility to fund future growth, the acquisition of additional ZEC, and new privacy-preserving technology investments."

The Winklevoss Connection

The involvement of the Winklevoss twins adds another layer of intrigue. Through the transaction, Winklevoss Capital gained exposure to Cypherpunk's Zcash mining strategy through the financing arrangement.

Their statement on the deal was characteristically direct:

"Up until now, investors have had limited options for Zcash mining exposure. With the acquisition of this mining fleet, Cypherpunk changes that."

The transaction was structured as a warrant deal—Winklevoss Treasury Investments received a pre-funded warrant to purchase 43,290,042 shares of Cypherpunk at an exercise price of $0.001 per share, reflecting a purchase price of $0.77 per share.

The Network Effect

Cypherpunk is framing this as a win for Zcash itself. The argument is straightforward:

"The additional mining hashrate and decentralization strengthens Zcash network security, and a more secure Zcash makes Cypherpunk's treasury more valuable."

With approximately 18% of network hashrate attributed to its fleet, Cypherpunk will represent a significant share of Zcash mining activity. The company's incentives are aligned with the network's long-term health, though the concentration also raises questions about mining centralization as the fleet expands.

Kevin Zhang Joins the Team

Cypherpunk also brought in Kevin Zhang as Head of Mining. His resume is worth paying attention to: he began mining Bitcoin in 2014, built some of the largest Bitcoin mining facilities in North America, led the first power plant conversion to Bitcoin mining in North America in 2019, and at Foundry, he built the largest Bitcoin mining pool in the world.

Zhang's take on Zcash mining is bullish:

"Approximately 1,440 ZEC is awarded to miners each day, making Zcash mining highly profitable. Even if the Zcash network hashrate increases significantly, Zcash mining still out-earns AI colocation and Bitcoin mining at today's ZEC prices."

He added that the opportunity in Zcash mining shows "a striking similarity to Bitcoin mining in 2016."

The Bigger Picture

Cypherpunk's move is part of a broader strategy. The company already holds ZEC, has invested in ZODL, a prominent Zcash wallet, and now has a mining arm.

"Following the expansion of our ZEC treasury and investment in ZODL, Zcash mining is the next piece of the constellation of privacy technologies we're assembling," McEvoy said.

The implication is clear: Cypherpunk is trying to build a vertically integrated Zcash ecosystem—holder, miner, and wallet provider.

What This Means For Zcash

The launch of Cypherpunk Mining is significant for a few reasons:

  1. Concentrated hashrate: One entity now accounts for roughly 18% of the network's hashrate. That raises centralization concerns, but Cypherpunk argues it strengthens network security.
  2. Institutional interest: A Nasdaq-listed company backed by Winklevoss Capital is betting big on Zcash. That's a signal.
  3. Vertical integration: Cypherpunk is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for Zcash exposure—treasury, mining, and wallet.
  4. Profitability signal: If Zhang is right about Zcash mining out-earning Bitcoin mining, it could attract more institutional capital to the network.

The Bottom Line

Cypherpunk Technologies has committed $33.33 million through a financing transaction tied to its Zcash mining strategy. The fleet is live, the hashrate is real, and the network now has one of the largest mining operations in its history.

For Zcash holders, it's a sign of institutional commitment. For the privacy community, it represents another sign of institutional interest in Zcash's privacy-focused ecosystem. And for Cypherpunk, it's another step toward its goal of holding 5% of all ZEC in existence.

The bigger question now is whether Cypherpunk's bet will attract more institutional capital—or raise fresh concerns about mining concentration across the Zcash network. Either way, Zcash has become a much more interesting institutional mining story.

The mining fleet launched August 18, 2026, with approximately 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate deployed across U.S.-based facilities.
